AFLAC made a splash in 1974 when it became only the second American company in history to sell insurance in Japan. Almost 30 years later, it is the second most profitable foreign company in Japan. It is also Japan’s second largest insurance company, insuring approximately 1 in 4 Japanese households, with the highest name recognition of any foreign financial services company. Nikkei Business magazine named it the safest insurer among the 19 largest insurance companies in Japan. AFLAC Chairman and CEO Daniel Amos discusses the impact of Japan’s insurance industry deregulation and gives his outlook for both the U.S. insurance industry and the Japanese economy, especially the beleaguered insurance sector.
