The Rise of Modern Japan

This program is offered in collaboration with Japan America Society of Houston and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Educators are invited to explore Japan’s Meiji era (1868–1912) through this unique professional development opportunity. Join us for an insightful historical overview of this dynamic period, which ushered in a period of rapid modernization, radical social and political shifts, and global connections to Japan. Featuring artwork from Meiji Modern: Fifty Years of New Japan, participants will also examine art from the Meiji era that reveals the profound cross-cultural impact of Japan’s developing relationships with the wider world.

Dr. Bradley Bailey, Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Curator of Asian art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

With the guidance of lead experts from Japan and the U.S., participants will become equipped to teach about Japan with ideas for lesson plans utilizing the rich primary sources provided. 3 hours of credit are available for TX in-service teachers.
