A.K.A. The Excitement of the Do-Re-Mi-Fa Girl
『ドレミファ娘の血は騒ぐ』
Do-re-mi-fa Musume No chi wa sawagu

With a Sanyo cassette player in hand, country girl Akiko—model Yoriko Doguchi, known for her collaborations with the late Kishin Shinoyama—makes her way to the debaucherous grounds of a Tokyo university in search of her hometown sweetheart. Taking place on a campus of earthly delights filled with blasé intellectuals, sex-crazed co-eds and even a shame-obsessed psych professor played by Juzo Itami, Bumpkin Soup channels the laissez-faire attitudes of the French New Wave by way of an absurdist retreat into ‘80s youth culture. Shelved from a Nikkatsu Roman Porno release for being too bizarre and subsequently re-edited and re-shot, Kurosawa’s second feature is a nonsensical Godardian work that throws everything at the wall, including musical numbers, humiliation experiments and non-sequiturs galore.

Dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa, 1985, 80 min., DCP, color, in Japanese with English subtitles. With Yoriko Doguchi, Usagi Aso, Juzo Itami.
