Friday, April 1 & Saturday, April 2
7 – 11 pm

Presented in association with Roulette.

Saturate yourself in onkyo – an umbrella term (fast becoming an international expression) for a new genre of computer music that is primarily atonal, noise-based and improvised. Eat, drink and be merry—with Japan’s most revolutionary composer/musicians of electronic sound pieces, curated by Carl Stone, the U.S. pioneer of live computer music hailed by the Village Voice as “The king of sampling.” Held in a hanami party (spring night flower-gazing) atmosphere, the audience is encouraged to come and go during the four-hour marathon.

Japanese artists include Otomo Yoshihide, considered the founder of the onkyo movement and leader of Ground Zero, who has been featured in major music festivals worldwide; leading electronica composer and former DJ Nobukazu Takemura, whom Spin magazine called “An enigma who stitches elegantly guileless symphonies out of a zillion delicate obsessive compulsive ticks”; Sachiko M, whose cutting-edge recordings consist entirely of sine wave improvisations that have become the focus of international interest; Paris-based AOKI takamasa, a rising figure in electronic music worldwide; rough-edged sound from Taku Hannoda, a young guitar-electronica virtuoso from Osaka; and Yoshimitsu Ichiraku, acclaimed for his drum/live video sampling performance Doravideo. Select New York-based composer/musicians, including the famed Elliott Sharp and o.blaat (Keiko Uenishi), will join this stellar group for improvisation sessions.

Tickets:  $25/$20 Japan Society & Roulette members,
two-day pass $40/$32 Japan Society & Roulette members.
Re-entry permitted with hand stamp.
