Mired in an economic malaise for the last decade, has Japan squandered an opportunity to establish itself conclusively as an economic and political world leader? Although the war on terrorism has required Japan to play a more active role in the U.S.-led coalition, its World War II legacy has kept it from becoming a major force in global diplomacy. And yet Japan has undergone swift change during its recent history and may have the capacity to change again. A panel of leading intellectuals, journalists and academics explores the prospects for Japan as an economic and political power in the 21st century.
