With official interest rates at rock-bottom levels in Japan and the United States, there are concerns that both countries are running out of monetary policy options to revive their economies. Prices have been falling in Japan for years, but now some fear the United States may also be facing the possibility of a deflationary spiral. What lessons can the U.S. learn in dealing with its own economic problems from Japan’s experience over the last decade? Roger Ferguson, second in command at the Federal Reserve Board after Chairman Alan Greenspan, discusses these and other issues confronting the U.S., Japanese and global economies in uncertain times.
