Hana: The Tale of a Reluctant Samurai

2006, 127 min., 35 mm, color, in Japanese with English subtitles. Directed by Hirokazu Kore’eda. With Yoshio Harada, Katsuo Nakamura, Teruyuki Kagawa, Yui Natsukawa, Susumu Terajima.
Set in 1702, Hana is a samurai film in which there are no flashing swords or bodies leaping over walls. Hirokazu Kore’eda’s (Maborosi, After life) latest is a black comedy-drama that deconstructs the myth of the brave samurai warrior and the bushido code of seeking honor through revenge, and offers a different take on the historical tale of the 47 loyal retainers.
