The Future of the Global Order and Disarmament: A conversation with Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu

Izumi Nakamitsu, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs at the United Nations, and David Janes, Vice President, North America of the International House of Japan and Executive Director of the American Friends of the International House of Japan, engaged in a dialogue on recent changes in the global order, the potential future role of the United Nations in this changing order and the future of discourse on disarmament. Discussion topics included dispelling myths about the United Nations and its day-to-day work, asserting the need for reform and democratization of the United Nations and other international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, efforts being made by the United Nations to assess the use of AI in both civilian and military applications, the importance of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and reducing the risk of nuclear war, and Ms. Nakamitsu’s initiatives to educate the next generation of disarmament experts.
