Q: Aures Thomas 覚える (oboeru) vs 思い出す (omoidasu)

思い出す (omoidasu) to recall or something reminds you of, retrieve old information from memory

部屋の掃除をしていたら高校の卒業写真を見つけた。お世話になった先生と同級生を思い出して、懐かしくなった。

Heya no souji o shite itara, koukou no sotsugyou shashin o mitsuketa. Osewa ni natta sensei to doukyuusei o omoidashite, natsukashiku natta.

I was cleaning my room and found my high school graduation photo. It reminded me of my dear teacher and classmates.

先週会った人の名前が思い出せない。

Senshuu atta hito no namae ga omoidasenai.

I cannot seem to recall the name of the person I met last week.

覚える (oboeru) to memorize, to store new information into your memory

ここはテストに出るから、覚えておいてくださいね。

Koko wa tesuto ni deru kara, oboete oite kudasaine.

This will probably be on the quiz, so be sure to memorize it.

漢字は時々、覚えるのも思い出すのも難しい。

Kanji wa tokidoki, oboeru nomo omoidasu nomo muzukashii.

Sometimes, Kanji is difficult both to memorize and to recall.

覚えている (oboete iru) to remember, to have a solid memory of something

5歳の時、一人で初めてバスに乗ったのを覚えてる？

Gosai no toki, hitori de hajimete basu ni nottano o, oboeteru?

Do you remember you rode the bus all by yourself when you were five years old?

大学の頃のことは、よく覚えています。

Daigaku no koro no koto wa, yoku oboete imasu.

I have a vivid memory of my college years.

思い出す (omoidasu): instantaneous reaction to the sight/smell/sound of something

覚えている (oboete iru): consistent state of being

Used when something matches your expectation.

今度は大丈夫かなと思ったけど、ジェットコースターに乗ったら、やっぱり気分が悪くなった。

Kondo wa daijoubu kana to omotta kedo, jetto ko-suta- ni nottara, yappari kibun ga waruku natta.

I thought maybe I’d be alright this time, but riding the roller coasters made me feel sick, just like I feared it would.

転校生の鈴木さんは性格も良くて綺麗だから、やっぱりすぐに学校の人気者になった。

Tenkousei no suzuki-san wa seikaku mo yokute kirei dakara, yappari sugu ni gakkou no ninkimono ni natta.

The transfer student, Suzuki-san, is kind as well as pretty. As expected, she instantly became popular at school.

思った通り (omotta toori)、予想通り (yosou doori)

試験の結果は思った通り、ボロボロだった。

Shiken no kekka wa, omotta toori, boroboro datta.

Just like I feared, the result of my exam was a disaster.

スターウォーズの新作は予想通りの大成功をおさめた。

Suta-wo-zu no shinsaku wa, yosou doori no daiseikou o osameta.

The new Star Wars movie was an enormous success as anticipated.

In the case of your brother coming home drenched:

ほら、言ったじゃん。雨が降るって。

Hora, itta jan. Ame ga furutte.

See, I told you it was gonna rain.

t (igai to)、予想外 (yosougai)

あのラーメン屋、めちゃくちゃ安いのに、意外と美味しかった。

Ano ramen-ya, mechakucha yasui noni, igai to oishikatta.

That ramen shop is super cheap, but I was surprised by how good it was.

長年負け続きのチームの勝利は、予想外の出来事だった。

Naganen maketsuduki no chi-mu no shouri wa, yosougai no dekigoto datta.

After losing for many years, the team’s victory this year came as a surprise to everyone.
