Language Center Overview
Japan Society’s Language Center offers a variety of courses, workshops and intensives throughout the year in Japanese language and shodo (Japanese calligraphy), English Conversation, Japanese-Language Teacher Training, and special courses. Regular course offerings include:
Japanese Language Classes
Thirteen levels of Japanese, from beginner to advanced, emphasize conversation, listening, reading and writing. JLPT test prep/kanji courses and special topic-base courses, such as Anime, Manga, J-Drama, Novels, Keizai Business, etc., are offered on a rotating basis.
Intensive Japanese Weekend Courses
Four-day intensive weekend courses offer “total immersion” in beginning Japanese and are designed to teach basic conversation skills.
Learn to Read Hiragana & Katakana
Mini-workshops teach beginning students the two Japanese syllabaries; hiragana and katakana.
Japanese conversation courses designed to strengthen students’ abilities to communicate effectively in social situations.
Shodo: Japanese Calligraphy
These hands-on workshops teach the techniques of shodo, Japanese calligraphy.
English Conversation Courses (English as a Second Language)
Beginner and Intermediate/Advanced English conversation courses geared toward native Japanese speakers.
Japanese-Language Teacher Training Course
An introductory Japanese-language teaching program for native and fluent speakers, this course covers the essential teaching skills needed to teach Japanese in classroom or individual settings.
This event is a monthly informal gathering for students of Japanese and English to practice their speaking skills.
Frequently Asked QuestionsHow do I know what level to register for?
If you are an absolute beginner of Japanese, please register for a level 1 course. If you have some previous experience, please consult our Japanese Level Guide, which outlines the material covered in each level. How can I register?
You can register online, over the phone by calling our office at 212-715-1269, emailing your registration to email@example.com, or mailing your registration to Japan Society, 333 East 47th Street, New York, NY 10017, Attn: Language Center. You can register online for all classes unless otherwise noted. Please call or email us if you have any questions about registration. Once you are registered, you will receive confirmation by letter, email or phone.
What are your office hours?
The Language Center office hours are 10:30 am–6:30 pm, Monday-Friday. Please leave a message if you do not reach us, and we will return your call as soon as possible. For Box Office, Gallery, or Business Hours, please visit the Japan Society homepage.
I want to become a Japan Society member. How can I do this?
At the Language Center, we can register you for a membership at the same time that you register for a class—just let us know! You are also welcome to become a member online. As a member, you will receive the member tuition discount on classes, among other events, at Japan Society.
I have already paid and registered for my class, but I need to drop out. What is the cancellation policy?
Tuition is non-refundable and non-transferable for any reason after 12 pm one business day before a class series starts. Please see the Course Description and Registration form for deadlines. All refunds are subject to a service charge, including those by the deadline day. No partial registration or auditing is permitted. Cancellations are accepted by phone or in person only. We do not accept email cancellations. Japan Society also reserves the right to cancel any course if sufficient enrollment is not obtained. In such cases, those students already enrolled will receive full refunds (no service charge).
Can I sign up for private lessons?

Do you have classes for children?
Occasionally we offer special classes and workshops for children. Please visit the Language Center homepage for upcoming class offerings. Japan Society’s Family Program also hosts a variety of events and festivals throughout the year with activities for children. Please check the Japan Society website or calendar for upcoming events.
Can I receive foreign language credit for my college by taking your courses?
Japan Society is not an accredited learning institution, and we do not grade our students. But it is up to your school whether they will receive our courses as credit.
