OPENHOUSENEWYORK WEEKEND AT JAPAN SOCIETY

Saturday, October 6, and Sunday, October 7

Celebrate the tenth anniversary of openhousenewyork’s annual city-wide architecture festival at Japan Society, New York City’s youngest landmark. Free programs throughout the weekend include building tours, origami workshops basic language classes, shodo calligraphy instruction, Zen meditation and more. Participants also receive complimentary admission to Japan Society’s major fall exhibition Silver Wind: The Arts of Sakai Hōitsu (1761-1828).

All events are free and open to the public. Any reservations for workshops or classes must be made in person on the day of the event; no advance reservations are accepted. Admission is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Docent-Led Building & Exhibition
Tours
Oct. 6 & 7
One hour tours at 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and 3:30 pm

Discover traditional Japanese elements of our historic landmark building and enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime exhibition Silver WindAll tours are one hour in length. Maximum capacity is 25 people per tour.





Origamic Architecture

October 6 & 7
30 minutes sessions, 11:00 am-5:00 pm

Led by designer Keiko Ota and Yoshiko Ebihara of Gallery91, this workshop features origami with an architectural twist. Participants use the traditional Japanese crafts of paper cutting and folding to make take-away art. A variety of architectural motifs are available, including some iconic pieces of the New York City skyline! Maximum capacity is 15 people per session. Due to the intricate paper cutting participants must be 16 years or older.

 



Shodo Classes

Oct. 6
30 minute session, 1:00-4:00 pm

Taught by master calligrapher Masako Inkyo, Japan Society offers 30-minute shodo (Japanese calligraphy) classes in which particpants learn basic brushstrokes and techniques integral to this ancient art form.

Maximum capacity is 15 people per class. Visitors may observe the already scheduled class on Sunday, October 7, but may not participate.

Japanese Language Classes
Oct. 6 & 7
30 minute sessions, 1:00-4:00 pm

If your Japanese stops at “sayonara” and “sushi,” stop by Japan Society’s Toyota Language Center to learn how to make introductions, basic greetings, and more. These classes are a great opportunity to see what kinds of things you’ll learn in our upcoming weekend intensive courses.  Maximum capacity is 15 people per class.



Origami Fun!

October 6 & 7
30 minute sessions, 1:00-4:00 pm

Children ages 5-10 take part in the traditional Japanese craft of folding paper into flowers, animals and various shapes and create their own origami structures to take home!

Maximum capacity is 15 people per class.




 


Zen Meditation with Bonnie Myotai Treace

October 7
10:00-11:00 am

Start off day 2 of OHNY weekend with a relaxing guided meditation session led by Zen priest and teacher Bonnie Myotai Treace. Doors open at 9:30 am. Due to the nature of this program, late arrivals will not be accommodated. Maximum capacity is 50 people.
