Frequently Asked Questions


Japan Society accepts donations to the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund from individuals, corporations and organizations. If you have any questions, please see the list below of commonly asked questions. If this list does not answer your questions sufficiently, please send an email to japanrelief@japansociety.org.


1. How will my donation to the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund be used?

The Japan Earthquake Relief Fund currently supports four organizations – Tokyo Volunteer Network for Disaster Relief, JEN, Entrepreneurial Training for Innovative Communities (ETIC), and the Japan NPO Center –involved in immediate relief efforts to help victims of the earthquake and tsunamis that struck Japan on March 11, 2011. Japan Society is now focusing on organizations that are working on long-term healthcare needs, including mental health services, and the needs of children, including children who have lost one or both parents. Additionally, Japan Society is committed to supporting organizations that contribute to the longer term recovery and reconstruction effort, which many experts believe will take five years or more.

Criteria in our selection process included implementation capability, efficiency, financial strength and transparency. We will make announcements about where additional funds will be allocated in the future as we complete our due diligence on potential recipients.


2. Is Japan Society a nonprofit organization? Will my donation be tax-deductible?

Japan Society is an American nonprofit, tax-exempt organization described in Section 501(c )(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Following your donation you will receive an acknowledgment for your 100% tax deductible donation with additional receipt information through the mail.


3. What percentage of my donation will go to administrative costs?

100% of donations will go directly to organizations in Japan contributing to the relief and recovery effort. Japan Society is absorbing the administrative costs of establishing the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund and processing donations.


4. How long will you be accepting donations?

As long as individuals, corporations and foundations show interest in supporting the longer term recovery and reconstruction process in Japan, Japan Society will keep the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund open for contributions. As we know from past experience, the need is great not just in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, but also in the longer term recovery and reconstruction process.


5. Is it possible to make a tax-deductible donation as an anonymous donor?


Yes, it is possible to make a tax-deductible donation and credit your donation as anonymous. Please indicate “Anonymous” in the donation form’s “Donor Acknowledgment” field. We will require your personal information in order to finalize payment and make your gift tax deductible, but this information will not be disclosed. We understand your privacy concerns and appreciate your support of the relief effort.


6. I would like to set up a collection at my business, workplace, school, club or place of worship for the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. Is this possible?

Please contact japanrelief@japansociety.org with your name, organization, contact information and brief fundraising plan for the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. In the meantime, the most helpful way to assist Japan Society at this time is to direct those who are interested in making a contribution to our website, www.japansociety.org/earthquake. Thank you for your help!


7. Can I rent Japan Society’s facilities for a fundraiser or partner with Japan Society to hold a fundraiser at your building?

Due to a full programming schedule and limited resources, Japan Society is unable to accommodate additional onsite fundraisers. In addition to our own fundraising events, 50% of ticket and admission sales made from March 14 to June 30, 2011 will go to the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. We appreciate your efforts and encourage you to consider the fund collection options outlined above.


8. Can I volunteer instead of donating?


Japan Society has very limited needs for volunteers for the administration of the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. However, if you wish, you may send an email to Japan Society Human Resources at jfenton@japansociety.org citing your background and qualifications. We will contact you if an appropriate volunteer opportunity becomes available.


9. I would like to donate clothing, non-perishable food, toiletries, art or other non-cash items. Is this possible?


We appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to help the people of Japan, but unfortunately Japan Society is not in a position to accept gifts of this nature due to limited resources.


10. I would like to make a donation to be acknowledged in honor of, or on the behalf of someone else. Is this possible?


Please email japanrelief@japansociety.org and we will be happy to speak with you in hopes of accommodating your needs. The appropriate Japan Society staff member will respond as soon as possible. Please note that we are also happy to accept anonymous donations.


11. I want to speak with the person in charge of the Japan Earthquake Fund.
